Lower School: General Information

Classroom Setup
Classrooms will be set up to maximize the use of space and to ensure proper physical distances among students. Teachers will teach students facing one direction. When the pedagogical approach requires sitting in groups, a distance of one metre will be kept between any two students. Plastic dividers have been installed at the tables when adequate social distancing is not possible due to the current space requirements or classroom furniture.

All students and staff are expected to wear a mask at all times, unless they are eating lunch in the cafeteria or instructed by their teacher to remove their mask for a particular activity. Families are encouraged to have three spare masks available in their child’s school bag in case it is required.

Personal Hygiene
Teachers will review with students the importance of personal hygiene. During the first few days of school each class will review how to wash their hands, when they should use hand sanitizer or wash their hands, how to ensure their mask is kept clean, the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouths and who to speak to if they are not feeling well. Posters will also be placed in the toilets to encourage hand hygiene.

Classroom Supplies and Manipulatives
Toys, shared objects and floor surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected at least twice a day. Classroom manipulatives that children may be using will be soaked in bleach water and wiped dry on a regular basis. Many families received resources from the school in order to support the remote learning programme. Each homeroom teacher will specify which supplies will need to return to school during their days on campus and which ones can stay at home.

Moving Around the Building
Students will be walked by a teacher/EA to each of their specialist classes in order to encourage social distancing during transitions. The main staircase that runs down through the building from the 9/F lobby will have directional arrows and a line down the middle in order to ensure that students are staying on the right side of the stairs as they move from one area to another. In the Lower School Tower, one staircase will be dedicated to walking up the stairs and one staircase will be dedicated to walking down the stairs. This will avoid students being in face-to-face situations as they move between floors.

Students will continue to wear their masks during recess time, and they will be encouraged to keep proper social distancing. Each grade will be designated a play area so that they are not mixing with students in other grade levels.  All common touch points in the playgrounds and indoor play areas will be disinfected after use. All students will perform proper hand hygiene procedures before and after each recess as they exit and enter the building. The playground equipment, such as soccer balls, will be disinfected after each recess time.

No live assemblies will take place at this time in order to prevent gatherings of large numbers of students and staff. A virtual assembly will be prepared every two weeks and shared with all the classes.
