Expected Traffic Delays along Nam Long Shan Road - Friday, August 31

On Friday, August 31, we are hosting a large delegation of visitors at the school between between 1pm-2:30pm. It is likely that there will be some disruption on Nam Long Shan Road during these hours and especially at the end of the school day. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable. We ask parents to be aware of this and, where possible, to leave their cars at home on Friday afternoon and make alternative arrangements to pick up their child/children, such as using the MTR or school bus service. If this is not possible, please be prepared for some disruption.

Save the Date: Stanley Cup Visit

Hockey fans might want to keep the morning on Wednesday, September 12 open as CDNIS will host the coveted Stanley Cup. Making its first ever visit to Hong Kong, we are excited to welcome the Stanley Cup, along with its "keeper", Philip Pritchard. Stay tuned to the Flash for details about the visit. We also have a special offer for our CDNIS community who plan to attend the NHL game between the Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins on September 15 in Shenzhen - a 10% discount! If you have not yet purchased your tickets, please email fiona@chinahockeygroup.com by Friday, August 31 and provide the code CDNISNHL and she will process your ticket order. Parent ID Passes

New parents are welcome to stop by the 10/F library the next time they are on campus to have their photo taken for their Parent ID pass. Cards will be ready approximately two weeks after your photo has been taken. Parents must wear their Parent ID pass at all times when they are on campus. This is for security reasons, and all adults present in school are required to display their ID pass with the correct colour lanyard. Parents with old red lanyards can get a new blue ones at the 9/F office.

Guardian ID Passes

All adults on campus are required to wear an identification badge and ensure it is clearly visible at all times. This includes helpers and grandparents who are in school to pick up students. For families who have changed helpers, please return the old guardian ID pass to the main office and have your new helper apply for a new one. For returning and new families who require guardian ID passes, please fill out this application form. Guardians can have their photos taken for their ID pass in the 9/F office every day this week, from 10:15am-10:45am, 11:30am-12pm and 2pm-3pm.

After School Chinese Culture Academy (ASCCA) Registration

If you are interested in enrolling your child in ASCCA for Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Dance, or Chinese Painting, please click here to register, by Saturday, August 25. To find out more about the instruments in the Chinese Orchestra, watch this video.

Join the MakeX Robotics Pre-Competition

CDNIS is proud to host the regional MakeX competition for Hong Kong International schools. We are running a pre-competition on Saturday, September 22 from 10am-3pm for CDNIS students. To join, form a team with 2 students plus a parent or teacher as mentor. You can take this opportunity to collaborate with your child and have an engaging day with robotic fun. Click here to sign up.

Proof of Stay

In accordance with regulations of HKEDB and HK Immigration, new and returning students must hold a valid HKID card and/or a valid passport with authorised residency status to be eligible for a place at CDNIS. Visitor visa holders are ineligible for a place at CDNIS. Please submit proof by email or in person to the Main Office. Please contact the Admissions Department if required.

CTY Information Session

Center for Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University, conducts the oldest and most extensive university-based talent search worldwide by offering above-grade level testing for Grades 2 through 8. CTY is hosting an upcoming information session at CDNIS on Friday, September 7, from 2:30pm-3:30pm. Please join us in the LLAC Theatre. Calling all Makers, Creators & Innovators!

The Blueprint Club, the CDNIS incubator for community innovation is calling all students, staff or parents who want to learn or share skills in any kind of making practice such as woodworking, coding, robotics, textiles, 3D printing, designing, crafts or cool ideas, come along the information session on Thursday, August 30 at 2:45pm in the new 6/F Makerspace (behind the Maple Cafe).

CDNIS College Clinic

The CDNIS US Guidance Team are offering a College Clinic every Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm-5pm for any member of the CDNIS Community. For more information, please contact Rob Aldridge or Scott Atherton in the US Guidance Office. All consultations will be confidential and offered on a first-come-first-served basis (for Thurs 4-5, please contact Scott Atherton to arrange a time).

Join the CDNIS Yoga Team!

LS and US Students can end Wednesdays in a peaceful manner. Yoga offers many benefits including flexibility, decrease of stress, balance of wellness, and most importantly it is fun! The Yoga Teams will meet every Wednesday starting August 29. US students will meet in the Fitness Room from 3-4 while the LS students (Grades 4-6) will meet from 2:45-3:30 in the Dance Studio. Order CDNIS Mooncakes for charity

Please consider purchasing mooncakes for your friends and family from the CDNIS Mooncake fund, which will fund the annual exchange trip for rural students in Hainan, China, to CDNIS later this year. The deadline for ordering is Monday, September 10.

Keynote Speakers wanted for an Upper School Leadership Retreat

We are looking for a dynamic speaker from our CDNIS community to share their experiences and inspire our Upper School students in aspects related to philanthropy, using talents for the greater good and finding creative solutions for community issues, for a Leadership Retreat on Saturday, September 22. If interested, contact us on this form, and we'll be in touch by early September.

Dress Down Day - Postponed

The first Dress Down Day of the school year has been postponed until Friday, September 7. Details of the theme will be announced next week.

Risk of Dengue Fever on Community Walks

LS admin are keenly aware of the number of Dengue Fever cases in the city and are monitoring the situation closely. At present, there are no reported cases of Dengue Fever on Hong Kong Island and our nurses are monitoring the CHP updates. With regards to community walks and field trips, we do not anticipate any field trips for at least another three weeks. When our students are scheduled to leave the building at that time, we will monitor on a case-by-case basis to ensure there is no exposure to risk.

Lower School Friday Assemblies - Date Changes

Please note the assembly dates in the CISPA calendar are not correct and homeroom teachers will contact their class parents directly, notifying them of any changes. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Lift Pass

Please be reminded that unless students are issued a Lift Pass by the school nurse or a staff member, they are not to use the lift at any time. Parents, please support this school policy by asking your child to take the stairs. 

Learning Spaces

Please be reminded that seating in lift lobbies and in the hallways are considered learning spaces. Parents and guardians are not to use these spaces during the teaching day. Instead we welcome you to visit our newly renovated bistro on the 6/F. 

G3-G6 Friday Fun in the Forum

G3-G6: Do you like to sing, dance, or tell jokes? Then join the PA Department's Friday Fun in the Forum performances at 11:10am-11:35am in the Forum. To participate, please fill in the sign up form. Our first FFF is on Friday, August 31. All participants must donate $20 in support of the DDD charity of the month. Can't participate this time? More opportunities for FFF will happen this year, so start practicing!

Sign-up to Perform in LS Assemblies

Calling all musicians! Students in the Lower School are invited to audition to perform a short solo or small ensemble in their grade level assemblies. For more information and to sign-up, please fill out the form found here for Prep, Grade 1-Grade 3 or Grade 4-Grade 6. Sign-ups are first come, first served!

Join the Beginning Band

Do you want to learn how to play a band instrument? Students in Grades 4 to 6 are invited to sign up for the Beginning Band here. No experience necessary! Rehearsals begin Thursday, September 6 from 2:45pm-3:55pm. Between August 20-31, interested students will select a given a day/time to try out the instruments and make their selection. Please email Kimberly Butler for more information.

Join the Intermediate Band

Do you already play a wind or percussion instrument? All students in Grades 4-6 are invited to join the new Lower School Intermediate Band. Rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays from 2:45pm-3:55pm after school starting on Wednesday, September 5. Auditions will take place from August 21-31. Join the LS Strings Ensemble

The LS Performing Arts Department is excited to offer an opportunity for students in Grade 3-6 who are already studying a string instrument outside of school to join the LS Strings Ensemble. Do you love to sing? Are you in Grade 3-6? The Lower School choir, the CDNIS Timbertones, is looking for you! This year-long ensemble will practice every week on Tuesdays after school. Upper School News

Reminder - US Science Parent Coffee Morning Today

Parents interested in learning more about science education in Grades 7 to 10 are welcome to attend a session with Head of Science, Mr. Darrell Sharp, today from 7:30am to 8:30am in the LLAC Lobby. We will be exploring the role of Project Based Learning in the Middle Years Programme Sciences, and how MYP Sciences connect the PYP and the DP.

Post-secondary Evening Session for Grade 12 Parents

To help you better understand the university application process and answer any questions that you may have, US Guidance will be hosting an information evening specifically for parents of Grade 12 students on Tuesday, August 28 in the LLAC Lobby at 6:30pm. Please RSVP for the event and the optional bus service here. Please note this date was incorrectly marked as August 30 in the CISPA calendar. The event happens Tuesday, August 28.

Experience Week 2018 Registration Procedures

The Experience Week 2018 Registration Form needs to be submitted online from August 23-26 and the Experience Week Registration Package Submission will take place at CDNIS from August 27-28. Please note that passports, or other official travel documents, must be valid until May 17, 2019. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that documents expiring prior to this date be renewed with the appropriate authorities. PSAT registration

Registration for students wishing to sit the PSAT on Saturday, October 13 is now open for Grade 10 and 11 students. Grade 9 students may register beginning Monday September 17 on a space-available basis. Registration will close on Friday, September 28. Please complete this form and return it with payment to Ms. Fung in US Guidance. 

Grade 11 Parent Information Night

Grade 11 parents, mark your calendar! DP Coordinator Brian Hull will hold an information evening on Tuesday, September 4 from 6:30pm-8pm in the LLAC Lobby for Grade 11 Parents. A bus shuttle is provided from Admiralty MTR at 5:30pm and Wong Chuk Hang MTR at 6pm and returning to several locations afterwards. 

Upper School Curriculum Night

Experience what it is like to be an Upper School student during Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 6 at 6pm, which starts with a full assembly in the LLAC Theatre. Buses to this event pick-up at Admiralty ay 5:15pm, also collecting at Wong Chuk Hang MTR on the way. Return buses depart from the school at 9:15 pm to: Causeway Bay, Admiralty, Central Pier. South Horizons / Sham Wan Towers / Larvotto / One Island South. 101 & 109 Repulse Bay Road / Stanley Plaza / 33 Tai Tam Road.

University visits this week

University representatives are starting to visit CDNIS! Visits take place in US Guidance unless otherwise noted. While intended for students, parents are welcome to attend as well. The following institutions are on campus on these days:

Calculators for Grade 9-12 students

The CDNIS Math Department is committed to providing high levels of instruction and support. We believe that in order to reinforce student learning, every Grade 9 student must have a graphing calculator available for math class. We advise purchasing the TI-Nspire (non CAS) or TI -84 Plus as those models are approved by the IBO and students will be able to use these from Grade 9 - 12 and beyond. 

Annual Habitat Build Trip

The annual Habitat for Humanity Build trip will be taking place from Thursday, September 27 to Monday, October 1, allowing students aged 15+ the opportunity to build houses in Thailand and make a difference for those living in substandard housing visit this link for more information! Visit our Facebook page to view photos of last year’s Philippines trip. Elevate Education Parent Workshop (Grades 7 and 9)

On Monday September 3, Elevate Education will give presentations to all students in Grades 7 and 9 about Time Management strategies. That same evening, they will lead a follow-up workshop for Grade 7 and 9 Parents to review those strategies and provide tips for how parents can encourage effective study habits at home. The Parent Workshop will run from 6pm-7pm in the LLAC theatre. Parents who would like to come can register here.

Dickson Poon School of Law Open Day

Learn about studying a law degree in the heart of legal London. Take the opportunity to speak to academics, meet current students and find out what it is like to study law at he Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College London. This event takes place on Saturday, September 1 at 1:30pm at the Island Shangri-La. To register, click here.

The session will be conducted by the USC Admissions Team on Sunday, October 7 from 2pm-4pm at the Conrad Hotel. They would like to share USC’s unique learning opportunities, student life, application procedures and academic choices. Alumni and Office representatives will also answer questions. CISPA Parents’ Drink Night

All parents are invited to the CISPA Parents Drink Night on Thursday, August 30 from 6:30pm-9:30pm. It's a great way to meet other CDNIS parents in a friendly atmosphere. Our school is well known for its warm community, so come meet and mingle with old friends, and new ones you haven’t met yet!

Family Fun Fair Volunteer Meeting

Calling all volunteers! The Family Fun Fair is on Sunday, November 25 this year and we need your help organising this big, beloved event. Come to the FFF Committee Meeting in the 10/F Library on Monday, September 3 from 8am-9:30am to get in on the fun and lend a hand.


Standup paddle boarding is a fun, active way to enjoy Hong Kong’s beautiful beachside waters. Join CISPA for a morning of SUP on Wednesday, September 12 from 10am to 12pm. No experience necessary.

CISPA Parents’ Social Lunch

It’s dim sum time. Parents are warmly invited to the AMC on Thursday, September 20 starting at 12 noon for a delicious dumpling lunch with CISPA. Bring a friend so we can order more food!
