Updates to School Bus Service

For those of you whose children use the school bus service, please take a moment to read the email sent on August 7 which explains the swipe card system, volunteer bus passes and revisions to swapping buses for playdates (48 hours notice MUST be given to KCM) as teachers/EAs will no longer be able to facilitate these changes. Thank you for your attention to these changes and touch base with KCM with questions.

The lunch menus and order forms for August to October are available now under the School Brochures section of the main school website. Maxim's Group is the school's catering provider and they can be contacted via email. Please register before the deadline, Friday, August 17.

School Uniforms

The CDNIS Uniform Shop will relocate all services to the small gym (August 13-17). Opening times will be August 13-15 @ 10am-4pm and August 16-17 @ 8am-4pm. Students will be able to try on and purchase items in the small gym during this time. The Uniform Shop will return to its 5/F location on August 20. As the majority of parents purchase uniforms during the Lower School Open House, please stop by and purchase uniform items a few days earlier if possible to avoid the last minute rush. Payment can be made by cash, cheque and EPS. As the 2018/19 school year will be a transition year for school uniforms, both current and new uniform items can be worn.

Congratulations to all members of the Class of 2018

In case you missed it, members of the Class of 2018 posted some stellar IB results. Along with a 100% pass rate, the average score was 37 – the highest average in the school’s history. We also had 43 students score 40 points or higher, and one student, James Chow, record a perfect 45. Another example of their standing is evident in the more than HK$16million in scholarships members of our Class of 2018 were offered for post-secondary institutions around the globe. Way to go!

Parent ID Passes

New parents are welcome to stop by the 10/F library the next time they are on campus to have their photo taken for their Parent ID pass. Cards will be ready approximately two weeks after your photo has been taken. Parents are asked to please wear their Parent ID pass at all times when they are on campus. The card can also be used as a library card as parents are welcome to check out books from the library.

Guardian ID Passes

All adults on campus are required to wear an identification badge and ensure it is clearly visible at all times. This includes helpers and grandparents who are in school to pick up students. For families who have changed helpers, please return the old guardian ID pass to the main office and have your new helper apply for a new one. For returning and new families who require guardian ID passes, please pay attention to Flash next week for further details on how to apply.

Chinese Studies New Parents Coffee Morning

The Chinese Studies new parents coffee morning will be held at 7:30am-8:30am on Monday, August 20 in the LLAC Lobby.  Director of Chinese Penny Pan will give a talk on the CDNIS Chinese programme and answer any questions over coffee and pastries. No sign-up is needed, just come over after dropping off your children.

New Initiatives: Student Information Management System

The school will soon roll out a new student information management system called Veracross. Some of the modules are already up and running and we will introduce the new Parent Portal in about a month. Parents will receive an email to their school account inviting them to sign in. Watch this space for details.

Attention Returning Parents: Progress Reports

With the new Parent Portal set to roll out in the coming weeks, the old Parent Portal will be deactivated. Please take a moment to go into the portal and download your child's past progress reports as these reports will not carry forward to the new portal. Parents will have until end of day Monday, August 27 to download the reports. Having trouble logging in, please email OneDoor.

Summer Renovations at CDNIS

Many thanks to our facilities team, who worked tirelessly over the summer on more than 60 projects to improve the learning environment around school. The new and improved areas include a new D&T studio, bistro, re-flooring of the LLAC stage, non-slip treatment around the swimming pool, a workshop on the 7/F, renovations in the main office and Upper School Guidance and more. We would like to recognise CISPA, whose generous support made it possible to purchase the new furniture in the bistro area on the 6/F.

Order CDNIS Mooncakes for charity

Please consider purchasing mooncakes for your friends and family from the CDNIS Mooncake fund, which will fund the annual exchange trip for rural students in Hainan, China, to CDNIS later this year.

Traffic and Safety

We work hard to make CDNIS a safe environment. Since there is no public parking at CDNIS and no parking along Nam Long Shan Road, we encourage students/parents to use the school bus. If you are driving to school, please follow the directions of our security guards. Lower School students get dropped @ 9/F entrance, Upper School students/taxis @ LLAC.

Weather Policy

Please take a moment to review the school's weather policy, which can also be found on pages 47-49 of the Parent Information Handbook. School closures are communicated via the main school website and mobile app. Additional information is also listed on the EDB website.

Solar Panels

The school is looking to install solar panels, and also introduce a carbon offset programme and a composting programme. If there are parents who have connections with solar panel companies or are involved in the industry, we would love to hear from you. A few years back our school had a proposal for up to HK$1million to install solar panels, however the grant was for a company which has changed hands, so the grant is no longer valid. It’s important to show our students that a carbon-based future is not viable and to encourage them to research other options. Please let our Head of School know if you can help out.

CDNIS Sailing and Rowing Teams return

We are excited to announce we will be opening LS Sailing on Thursdays and will continue to have US Sailing and Rowing on Tuesdays this season. The programme will be delivered by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) at Middle Island. Please contact the Athletics Office to learn more about the teams.

Just a reminder there is no school for students on Tuesday, September 25 (Day after Mid-Autumn Festival), Monday, October 1 (National Day of PRC) and the Mid Term Break takes place October 15-19, while Monday, October 22 is a Professional Development Day for staff. Please mark these dates on your calendar. The full school calendar is also available in the Parent Handbook and on the main school website.

Save the Date - CDNIS Golf Day

Summer Travels 2018 - Send us your postcards

There is still time! Where did you go during your summer vacation? Take part in the CDNIS Summer Travels 2018 Postcard project. Thank you for the post cards and pictures sent to us so far. Please keep them coming! Drop us a postcard to: CDNIS Summer Travels 2018, 36 Nam Long Shan Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong or take a picture (don't forget to tell us where the picture was taken) and email it to us. We will post the post cards and images on a BIG world map when school resumes.

Shuttle Bus Service Refunds

Due to the low ridership of the shuttle bus service between the Wong Chuk Hang MTR station and CDNIS, the service was suspended at the end of the 2017/2018 school year. A refund will be available for all un-used shuttle bus tickets until Friday, August 31. Please bring your un-used tickets to the 9/F office for a refund.

Upper School News

Upper School Uniforms - Availability 2018/2019

The 2018/19 school year will be a transition year in terms of the Upper School uniforms: both current and new uniform items can be worn. While many uniform items remain the same, there are design and fabric changes of the shirts/blouses, pants, shorts and skirts/skorts. Not all new items will be available at the beginning of the school year and some may not be available until November or December due to student feedback which indicates further design modifications are required. This is especially the case with the girl’s blouse. Girls entering Grade 7 should purchase the current blouse which can be worn for the entire year. Please see the following link for more information about US Uniforms.

New Student/Parent Orientation

Upper School Parents new to CDNIS are invited to attend the orientation on Wednesday, August 15 from 9:30am - 2pm. Details can be found on page 7 of the Start of School Guide. If you plan on attending, please RSVP here. New students are not expected to wear their school uniform on this day.

Find out who your teacher is

Upper School students will receive their class schedules and find out who their teachers are on their first day of school on Thursday, August 16. Students will find their homeroom assignment posted in the 6/F cafeteria and will proceed to that classroom for 7:45am. All students will spend the first block in homeroom, then proceed to the large gym for a welcome assembly at 9:10am.

Students and Lockers

Grade 7-8 : All students will be assigned lockers but will be required to bring their own combination lock. Any model will suffice as long as it is has a combination. Grade 9-12: Students can choose to sign up for a locker and will be required to bring their own combination lock. Any model will suffice as long as it has a combination.

Grade 9-12 Experience Week Website, November 2018

The Experience Week 2018 website offers detailed information with regards to the programme itineraries, procedures, and schedules. In 2018, Experience Week will take place from November 12-16, with most programmes beginning on Saturday, November 10. A total of 24 programmes will be offered to Grade 9-12 students. For Experience Week, Passports, or other Official Travel Documents, must be valid until May 17, 2019. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that documents expiring prior to this date be renewed with the appropriate authorities, such as the consulates in Hong Kong and Canada.
