Project Innovate Parents Coffee Morning

Roll-up your sleeves and get ready for some hands-on learning. Please join us for our Project Innovate Parents Coffee in the LLAC Lobby from 7:30am-8:30am on Tuesday, September 26. Discover how we are using Stanford University's Design Thinking Model across the school and join us on a tour of the new Lower School Science and Innovation Lab. No sign-up is needed, just drop by the LLAC after you've dropped off your children.

Parenting the Digital Native - A Workshop for Grade 3-10 Parents

Join Dr. Mark Gandolfi, St. John's Cathedral Counseling Team Wednesday, September 27 7pm-8:30pm in the LLAC Lobby. This parent workshop will focus on parenting in a digital world. The Internet is part of our world and an important tool in education but research shows young people are spending an average 44.5 hours weekly online. Mark will address how to parent against that influence. Please RSVP here.

Mid-Term Camp - Sign-Up Today

Let the kids burn some energy during the Mid-Term Holiday Camp October 3, 4 and 6. The camp is open to CDNIS and non-CDNIS students aged 4 to 12. Check out Major League Sports Academy's kindergarten sports camp and football courses! Timba Swim School will be back, as well as gymnastics, and this Summer's popular Friends for Life Programme. Hainan Exchange Students – CDNIS Host Families Needed

The CDNIS Lower School Mandarin Department will host 15 Hainan Siyuan Primary School exchange students and we are looking for 15 Grade 4-6 families to host these students from October 14-20. If you have a spare bedroom and are interested in giving your child(ren) the opportunity to speak Mandarin and make friends, please fill in this Host Family Registration Form by September 29. Thank you to our parents who held a successful fundraising effort by purchasing almost 700 boxes of moon cakes to fund the Hainan students.

Timberwolves Success

Visit the Timberwolves website which celebrates participation, enjoyment and success in various sports. Last weekend, CDNIS hosted a 16 team International Invitational Volleyball – an event which celebrates our local and global engagement through sport. We also hosted two successful swim meets. Thanks to our team of coaches and our wonderful school for providing such awesome opportunities for our athletes.

Equestrian Team Update

Congratulations to the Equestrian team and the confirmation that two riders have been selected in the elite HK JETS programme (Junior Equestrian Training Squad). This is the highest level achievement for riders and is recognition of their hard work and dedication to their sport. More details on the Timberwolves site.

Center for Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University

Center for Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University, conducts the oldest and most extensive university-based Talent Search worldwide by offering above-grade level testing for grades 2 through 8. CTY is hosting an upcoming information session at CDNIS on Friday, November 10 from 2:30pm-3:30pm. Please join us in the LLAC lobby! Please RSVP here before Monday, November 6. Waiting for Students

We would like to ask parents and others who may be on campus waiting to pick up a student at the end of the day or following an ASA to please wait for the student in the 6/F cafeteria or 9/F lobby. Please do not hang out in the hallways or staircases. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Happy "Canadian" Thanksgiving

In honour of Canadian Thanksgiving (October 9), a collection of maple leaves will be available in the 9/F lobby all this week for students, staff and parents to write what they are thankful for. The leaves will be displayed in the 9/F lobby after Mid-Term break until Halloween. Maxim's is also planning a special Thanksgiving lunch feast October 10-13.

Halloween Costumes

Just over a month to go until Halloween. This year, the entire school will mark the occasion on Tuesday, October 31. Students from Pre Reception to Grade 12, staff and parents are encouraged to dress up! It's never too early to plan your costume, but please remember that our school is "weapons-free" in terms of costumes and related props (i.e. no swords, knives, etc). We also request that - with students at CDNIS being as young as 4-years old - you are mindful of the use of "gore" and scary costumes. Check out some of the costumes from last year right here!

Terry Fox Run Hong Kong

Join us for the Terry Fox Run at RCHK in Ma On Shan on Saturday, November 4. Please join us at this family-friendly event in support of cancer research. Organizers are aiming to have 2000 participants and raise HK$1million. The race will have 3km/5km and 10km. The school will offer free busses to/from CWB to RCHK. Watch this space for details and to sign up for the "CDNIS Timberwolves for Terry" school team!

Parent Liaison Committee

This is the third year since the Board of Governors has re-established the Parent Liaison Committee (PLC). The PLC is a multi-stakeholder Committee, comprised of Governors, Parents, and School Administrators. The PLC serves as a communication channel between parents and the Board of Governors. To contact the PLC, please email parentliaisoncommittee@cdnis.hk.

Ordering School Lunch

The October Menu and Lunch Order Form are available on the CDNIS website under "brochures". Parents can order lunch by filling out the form and dropping it off, with payment, in the 6/F Cafeteria or by mail to CDNIS.

Shuttle Bus Service

CDNIS operates a shuttle bus service between the Wong Chuk Hang MTR station and the School. The service runs from 6:55am to 5pm during school days and costs just HK$4 per trip. The bus stop at CDNIS is at the LLAC. Please click here for the schedule. Kindly purchase your tickets from the 9/F General Office before boarding. No cash is accepted on the bus. If you don't have the ticket upon boarding, you will be asked to purchase the tickets from the General Office after the ride and present one of the tickets to the General Office.

Lost and Found - Valuable Items

Please stop by the 9/F office this week if you have lost a valuable item. A number of items have been turned in to the office including phones, wallets, watches, glasses, Kindles, Octopus cards and more. If you or your child has lost anything of significant value at school, office staff might have it.

Application Deadline for 2018/2019 School Year

Please note the application deadline for Pre Reception to Grade 2 has been brought forward to Saturday, October 14, 2017 for 2018/2019 school entry. Admissions assesments for the aforementioned grades will begin in December of the preceding school year for applicants who successfully apply on or before October 14. Please contact the Admissions Office via email or by phone (2240 6363) for further assistance or information.

Winter Clothing for Laos Experience Week Trip

The Laos CAS Week programme is seeking donations to take with us for the community we will be visiting. Ideal clothing items should be suitable for cold weather, for example sweaters, or something similar, and winter jackets. Please, no thick jackets and shoes as they will be too difficult to pack, and no baby clothing is needed. Donations may be dropped off in the 9/F lobby area. On behalf of the Laos community we are helping, thank you.

Second Term School Tuition Fee Deadline

Second term tuition fees are due Tuesday, October 31. Invoices will be posted to the Parent Portal under NetClassroom>Billing starting October 1. For any parents who wish to pay for tuition fee by direct debit, please take a moment to fill out this direct authorisation form from HSBC. Any inquiries can be directed to our Accounts Department.

CISPA - Meditation Sessions for Parents

Join us for a parent meditation session. Under the guidance of alumni parent Sharon Leng, who is a healing therapist and wellbeing specialist. Sessions are held at various locations at the school. On Friday, September 29 we will do our practice in the LLAC Lobby. Interested participants should contact Lucia Del Vita to RSVP. More details can also be found on the CISPA website.

CISPA - Outreach Committee's First Meeting of 2017/18

CISPA - Family Fun Fair Vendor Tables

Check out the CISPA website this coming Monday, September 25 for the application form for vendor tables at the 2017 Family Fun Fair. Join us on Sunday, November 26 for a fun-filled day at our Winter Wonderland themed Fair. Tables are $1200 for CDNIS parents and $1500 for all others. Please complete the application at the link by no later than Friday, October 13.

Lower School News

Attention Lower School Parents

Just a reminder that our Early Years Programme continues as normal during 3-Way Learning Conversations this week. AM and PM Pre Reception-Prep students attend school as normal. Grade 1-6 students only come to school during their scheduled time and must wear their school uniform.

Early Years Parent Workshop

Pre Reception, Reception and Prep are using Seesaw to document their learning journey. Seesaw gives students a platform to capture and reflect on their learning and provides parents a window into their children’s learning process. To learn more, parents are welcome to join us on Wednesday, September 27 from 8am-9:10am in the LLAC Lobby. Come and learn about the purpose of portfolios, role of parents and how to access their portfolio. Pancake & PJs Day

Celebrate the end of Lit Blitz on Wednesday, September 27. Students may come to school in their pyjamas and buy a pancake lunch! Prep-Grade 1 @ $34 and Grade 2-6 @ $37. Prep-Grade 2 students should bring exact change in a labeled envelope, Grade 3-6 students may pay with cash or Octopus. Students with school lunch will receive pancakes at no extra cost. This is a free DDD.

Collection of Annual Field Trip Fees

A kind reminder about the field trip annual fee collection. Letters were sent to all parents last week with specific details or please check your child's teacher's blog for more information. Cheques can be made out to "CDNIS".

Green Halloween

The LS Roots & Shoots Club are running a Halloween Costume & Accessory Swap from October 16-18 at lunchtime to promote environmental awareness and community sharing. Pick up a pre-loved Halloween costume for only $10, which will go towards an R&S charity donation. Have an old costume to donate? Leave it in the Green Halloween bin in the 9/F Lobby from September 25 onwards.

Lower School House Days

Show your house spirit by participating in the Lower School House Days around the middle Friday of each month. Students can wear their PE uniforms and sit with others from their Houses at lunch. It’s an enjoyable and positive way to connect and build House community and we look forward to a full showing of colours at the first Lower School House Day on Friday, October 13.

Upper School News

CDNIS Panel Presentation on U.S. Women's Colleges

CDNIS will host a public presentation on U.S. women's colleges, Tuesday, September 26 from 7pm-8:30pm in the LLAC lobby. Grade 9-12 students and parents are invited to come and learn about the unique learning opportunities available to women at these outstanding small liberal arts colleges. To RSVP, please complete this form. Bus service to and from school will be provided.

Upper School Dance

On Thursday, September 28, the USSC will be hosting an Upper School Dance from 5:30pm-8:30pm at the school. This event is free of charge and is open to all Grade 7-12 CDNIS students. Pizza and drinks (extra charge) will be available. Free buses to major locations will be provided after the event.

Dress Down Day

Friday, September 29 is DDD in the Upper School. The theme is "Twin Day". All proceeds will be donated to a student nominated charity. (Charity yet to be determined.)

Attention MYP Parents

We are in the process of re-designing our MYP report card for grades 7-10. The input of some parents would be helpful. Please fill out this form if you are willing to help by participating in an online survey which be conducted shortly after October Break.
