Happy "Canadian" Thanksgiving

In honour of Canadian Thanksgiving (October 9), we asked students, staff and parents to write what they are thankful for on a leaf before Mid-Term Break. The leaves are on display in the 9/F lobby and will stay up until Halloween. Maxim's is also planning a special Thanksgiving lunch feast all this week.


School Photos Next Week

Just a reminder that school photos take place all next week. Homeroom teachers will post date and time details for when their class will have their photos taken on their blogs.


70th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Registration Open

LS and US students interested in participating in the 70th HK Schools Music Festival must complete either the duo form, or the solo form and submit them, along with payment to Mrs. Kimberly Butler (LS) or Ms. Jessy Po (US). Fees must be paid by cheque to CDNIS. Deadline for submitting applications is Friday, October 13. For more information regarding fees for duo and solo performances, please access the festival syllabus.


Application Deadline for 2018/2019 School Year

Please note the application deadline for Pre Reception to Grade 2 has been brought forward to Saturday, October 14, 2017 for 2018/2019 school entry. Admissions assesments for the aforementioned grades will begin in December of the preceding school year for applicants who successfully apply on or before October 14. Please contact the Admissions Office via email or by phone (2240 6363) for further assistance or information.


Terry Fox Run Hong Kong

Join us for the Terry Fox Run at RCHK in Ma On Shan on Saturday, November 4. Please join us at this family-friendly event in support of cancer research. Organizers are aiming to have 2000 participants and raise HK$1million. There will be 3km/5km and 10km routes to walk or run. The school will offer free busses to/from CWB to RCHK. Watch this space for details and to sign up for the "CDNIS Timberwolves for Terry" school team!


Center for Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University

Center for Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University, conducts the oldest and most extensive university-based Talent Search worldwide by offering above-grade level testing for grades 2 through 8. CTY is hosting an upcoming information session at CDNIS on Friday, November 10 from 2:30pm-3:30pm. Please join us in the LLAC lobby! Please RSVP here before Monday, November 6. Halloween Costumes

Just over a month to go until Halloween. This year, the entire school will mark the occasion on Tuesday, October 31. Students from Pre Reception to Grade 12, staff and parents are encouraged to dress up! It's never too early to plan your costume, but please remember that our school is "weapons-free" in terms of costumes and related props (i.e. no swords, knives, etc). We also request that - with students at CDNIS being as young as 4-years old - you are mindful of the use of "gore" and scary costumes. Check out some of the costumes from last year right here!


Parenting the Digital Native

We were fortunate to have Dr. Mark Gandolfi present to our community about the important issue of technology use by our children. You can access his slides here.


International Day of Peace

CDNIS celebrated the UN International Peace Day on September 21 in a creative way across the whole school. Between creating 'Peace flags' and drawings to add to the "Paths to Peace" forest, the 'Peace puzzles' and an opening musical number (see video), we shared what Peace looks like and how we would practice it.  Check out more stories on the Taking Action website!


Ordering School Lunch

The October Menu and Lunch Order Form are available on the CDNIS website under "brochures". Parents can order lunch by filling out the form and dropping it off, with payment, in the 6/F Cafeteria or by mail to CDNIS.


Shuttle Bus Service

CDNIS operates a shuttle bus service between the Wong Chuk Hang MTR station and the School. The service runs from 6:55am to 5pm during school days and costs just HK$4 per trip. The bus stop at CDNIS is at the LLAC. Please click here for the schedule. No cash is accepted on the bus. Kindly purchase your tickets from the 9/F General Office before boarding.


Waiting for Students

We would like to ask parents and others who may be on campus waiting to pick up a student at the end of the day or following an ASA to please wait for the student in the 6/F cafeteria or 9/F lobby. Please do not hang out in the hallways or staircases. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.


Second Term School Tuition Fee Deadline

The 2017/18 second term tuition fee is due on Tuesday, October 31. Invoices are posted to the Parent Portal under NetClassroom>Billing. For any parents who wish to pay the tuition fee through direct debit arrangement, please take a moment to fill out this Direct Debit Authorization Form from HSBC. Any inquiries can be directed to our Accounts Department.

Come to school on Sunday, November 26 for a fun-filled day at a Winter Wonderland. Enjoy games and fun activities, sample delicacies at the international food festival, and refresh your shelves at the recycled book stall. And so much more!

Grades 1-6 Goal Setting

Please note that as a follow up to 3-Way Learning Conversations, students and teachers will finalize goal setting through the classroom programme. Student learning goals will be shared after October 20.


Green Halloween

The LS Roots & Shoots Club are running a Halloween Costume & Accessory Swap from October 16-18 at lunchtime to promote environmental awareness and community sharing. Pick up a pre-loved Halloween costume for only $10, which will go towards an R&S charity donation. Have an old costume to donate? Leave it in the Green Halloween bin in the 9/F Lobby.


Lower School House Days

Show your house spirit by participating in the Lower School House Days around the middle Friday of each month. Students can wear their PE uniforms and sit with others from their Houses at lunch. It’s an enjoyable and positive way to connect and build House community and we look forward to a full showing of colours at the first Lower School House Day on Friday, October 13.


Parent Talk: Emotional Resilience

Emotional resilience refers to a person's ability to adapt, manage and overcome stressful situations. A child who is emotionally resilient is better equipped to cope with adversity and recover from hardship. Fortunately, emotional resilience can be fostered and nurtured and in this parenting talk, Dr Ying Kan will share the latest research on emotional resilience and suggest practical strategies to support your child. Join us Wednesday, October 18 from 12:30pm-2pm in the LLAC Lobby. RSVP here.


Friday Fun in the Forum

Grade 3-6 Students: Do you like to sing? Dance? Tell jokes? Then join the PA Department's Friday Fun in the Forum on Dress Down Days from 11:10am-11:35am. If you'd like to participate, please complete the sign up form.  All participants must donate $20 to perform with proceeds going to the DDD charity sponsored that week. Not able to participate this time? More opportunities will happen throughout the year. The next event takes place October 27.


Collection of Annual Field Trip Fees

A kind reminder about the field trip annual fee collection. Letters were sent to all parents last week with specific details or please check your child's teacher's blog for more information. Cheques can be made out to "CDNIS".

Tuesday, October 10: University of Sydney (12:20pm-1:20pm;); Wednesday, October 11: Parsons School of Design-The New School (portfolio review will be offered! - 3pm-4pm); Monday, October 16: NYU (12:15pm-1:15pm); Tuesday, October 17: San Jose State University (3pm-4pm); Wednesday, October 18, Concordia University (12:25pm-1:15pm); Friday, October 20: CUHK Shenzhen campus and EU University (12:25pm-1:15pm).


Studying Bio Sciences in the UK

This evening, Monday, September 9 from 5:30pm-8:30pm, the British Council will offer an information session on study options and careers in the Biological Sciences in the UK. For more information and to register, visit this website.


SCAD Spotlight Day

Join SCAD Hong Kong for a day of faculty-led interactive workshops SCAD Spotlight Day on Saturday, October 14 from 2pm-5pm. Learn more about the university’s art and design degree programs and academic environment, and meet one-on-one with SCAD admission representatives. Register here to attend.


PSAT Testing Date and Time

A reminder for those students who have registered, the PSAT will take place this Saturday, October 14 at CDNIS in the large gym. Students should arrive by 7:30am; the test will begin by 8am and conclude no later than 12noon. Students should bring some #2 pencils, snacks, water bottle, and a sweater or hoodie. Questions? Art Portfolio Review at CIS

Four U.S. Art Schools - Maine College of Art, Maryland Institute College of Art, Parsons School of Design at The New School, and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) will be at Chinese International School (CIS) on Saturday, October 14 from 11am-4pm. CDNIS students are welcome to participate.


University of Toronto: HK Scholarship Information Session

On Thursday, October 19 from 7pm-9pm, the University of Toronto will hold an information session for Hong Kong students and parents on scholarships available to Hong Kong students. It will take place at HK Central Library. Click here for further information and to register.


Register for the ACT

The next scheduled ACT is Saturday, December 9. Deadline for registration is Friday, November 3. Registration is simple and available through the online site, www.act.org. Students must create a free ACT web account in order to register. Finally, as CDNIS is an 'unlisted' test centre only students currently enrolled in CDNIS may register under our school's code. Please contact Ms. Lolita Schmalenberg directly if you would like to register.
