Reaching Out, Touching Lives
The foundation of any successful school is the close bond shared between students and teachers. With their commitment of learning from one another and a passion for making a difference, the CDNIS family is achieving excellence all around the world! This week, we talk to CDNIS' long-serving Head of Admissions Emily Pong who has published a new book! Titled "Sharing With You", the book chronicles some of the most memorable admission cases that she has encountered in her career, spanning over two decades. Coffee with the iHOS
Parents are welcome to join iHOS David Baird for a coffee at Starbucks on Thursday, February 23 between 10am-12noon. Please join him at the Starbucks at Alexandra House, Shop 201, 2/F, 16-20 Chater Road. Come out for a coffee and a casual chat.
As iHOS David Baird mentioned in his letter to parents last week, the school recently received a very optimistic and positive report following the visit by CIS/WASC team. To access the report from CIS/WASC, please go into the Parent Portal and you will find the documents under School Documents - CIS. Parent Input Needed: IB Surveys
There is still time to give your thoughts regarding the IB Programme at our school. The school is looking for parent perspectives on how you think our programmes are meeting your needs and the needs of your child. Please click on these links to participate in the survey in which your children are in the corresponding grades - IB PYP Survey (Pre Reception to Grade 6), IB MYP Survey (Grade 7-10) and IB DP Survey (Grades 11-12). The surveys will be open until Tuesday, February 28.
TWolves ISSFHK Championship Playoffs Accomplishments
Season 2 came to an exciting and successful end last week with Championship week for all sports. Please click on the links to celebrate the success of Basketball (Gold Silver and Bronze), Tennis (Double Gold and Bronze), Ball Hockey (Silver), Cross Country (Gold/Silver and Bronze), and ISSFHK Rock Climbing Champs. SEASAC Recap - Basketball, Rugby, Touch Rugby and Tennis
February 9-12 was a busy time for our SEASAC Teams, we travelled to Myanmar and Singapore to take part in SEASAC sports. SEASAC is our highest level of sport and involves 12 of the best schools from Malaysia/Thailand/Singapore/Indonesia/Myanmar/Hong Kong. CDNIS also hosted a very successful SEASAC Touch Rugby/Rugby event in partnership with HKRFU; involving 400 athletes and officials. 25th Anniversary Event - Hope Through Music Charity Concert
CDNIS is proud to host the Hope Through Music Charity Concert on Friday, March 3 at 7pm. This charity provides free musical instruments/education to children from low-income families. Funds raised will be used to buy instruments and to recruit musicians to teach the children. The CDNIS Chinese Orchestra, Treble Timbertones Choir, Stage Band and Symphonic Winds will also perform. 25th Anniversary Event - Birthday Cake Competition
The 25th Anniversary Celebration Committee will hold a Birthday Cake Competition on Thursday, March 9 to commemorate CDNIS' special year. As part of the competition, the committee is encouraging both family and staff entries. A sample cake is on display at the 9/F Lobby, made by one of our own parents, Lucy Chin. The categories are: Most Popular, Most Creative and Tastiest Cake. For more details, please refer to the sign up form. Entry Deadline: Friday, March 3.
Using Sports to Support Refugees in HK
Free to Run is an NGO that helps refugees overcome trauma and build confidence through sports. Virginie Goethals (Free to Run board member & CDNIS parent) and two refugees will give a talk, hosted by its CDNIS club on March 1 in the Alan Dick Forum at 12:20pm-1pm. Sporting equipment donations are accepted throughout the week with donation boxes around school. Parents are encouraged to attend and donate.
Ordering School Lunch
The March and April Lunch order forms and menus (March and April menus) are available on the CDNIS mobile app under Contacts-CDNIS Brochures-Cafeteria. Due to technical issues, parents can order lunch using the paper form. Maxim's apologizes for any inconvenience caused. The paper ordering for February meals is open until February 28. Please contact Maxim's directly for more information.
Applause for a Cause - Save the Date
Applause for a Cause - February 24, 7pm, LLAC Auditorium. An Upper School whistle stop tour through some of the best songs from a variety of musicals from classic to modern, tragic to funny! All proceeds will go directly to charity! Tickets will be on sale from Monday, February 13 from 505 at lunchtimes or the LLAC foyer. Adults - $100 and students $50.
Alan Dick Community Day
Please join us for Alan Dick Community Day on Thursday, March 9 at CDNIS. Take a moment to see some of the highlights the Upper School Photography Team captured last year. The Alan Dick Community Day is a whole-school event. We hope to see many parents at the event March 9. Please wear your pink wristbands, which were distributed last year. The event will go ahead rain or shine. Watch this space for more details.
Easter Holiday Chinese Studies Programmes
During your Chinese New Year break, you might wish to start planning for your Easter holiday Chinese Studies programmes. This includes an exchange programme with Siyuan Primary School in Hainan, which will see 15 grade 4-6 students visit the school in China from April 9-15; as well as a number of IB Chinese Exam Prep courses for current G11/G12 MFL/MSL/MHL students during the Easter break. Easter Holiday Silicon Valley Entrepreneurship Workshops
Named by CNN Money as one of the five most unique camps in the US, Camp BizSmart has strategic partnerships with companies such as Microsoft, Cisco and Alibaba, and educational alliances with universities including Stanford and Santa Clara. CDNIS is excited to announce this one of it's kind entrepreneurial skills based workshop for students aged 11-16. Please apply here.
Summer Holiday Chinese Studies Programmes
During your Chinese New Year break, you might wish to start planning for your Summer holiday Chinese Studies programme. Activities that are available this year include the Beijing Language B Mandarin Immersion Programme on June 9-23 (20 places for G4-11 students); Taiwan Language A Mandarin Immersion Programme on June 9-23 (30 places for G4-11 Mandarin A/MHL students); and the CDNIS on-campus Mandarin courses for Prep-G11 students that will be held between June and August.
Maxims Foodlink Donations
Maxims Catering continues to work with Foodlink, donating edible, hygienic leftover food from CDNIS operations to the NGO for re-distribution to charities. In December and January, 44kgs and 73kgs, respectively, were donated. This reduces food waste going to landfills, improves community networks and provides much needed food to those who don't have enough. This is a long-running initiative in our EcoSmart movement, demonstrating Maxims' contribution to corporate social responsibility.
CISPA - Notice of CISPA Annual General Meeting
CISPA's AGM will take place on March 16 at 8am in the LLAC. Parents will receive reports of the Board, consider accounts, and participate in an election (if required). Current directors who have indicated they may seek re-election are: Sébastien Evrard, Lucia delVita, Grady Lam, Sabrina Maguire, Christina Matula-Häkli, Amy Ng, Mariette Rinck and Debbie Waugh. CISPA - US Book Swap
The Upper School Book Swap will be held on Tuesday, February 28 in the Forum. If you would like to volunteer for book sorting or manning the tables at the swap, please contact Kathrin from the Literacy Committee.
CISPA - Parent Workshop
Join us for a parent workshop on conversational reading by US-based literacy consultant Diane Frankenstein. Learn how you can help your children gain a deeper understanding of what they are reading by thinking and reflecting. Read a book, ask a question, start a conversation.
