Reaching Out, Touching Lives

The foundation of any successful school is the close bond shared between students and teachers. With their commitment of learning from one another and a passion for making a difference, the CDNIS family is achieving excellence all around the world! The 1st Hong Kong Canadian Scout Group enjoys a long and storied history, having been founded back in 1992. It is also the only Canadian Scout Group that is chartered under Scouts Canada and operates outside of the country. Now in its 25th year, the group has become the longest activity programme offered here in Canadian International School of Hong Kong. HOS Search: Parent Listening Sessions

We would like to thank everybody who attended listening sessions last week and offered input into our permanent Head of School search. To allow for as much parent input as possible, we have added additional listening sessions on Wednesday, February 15. Please click here to join or session or email Samantha Man directly. For those of you unable to attend a session, an online survey will be sent out this week to all parents.


CIS/WASC Visit Update

After a very positive CIS/WASC preliminary visit in January, the school has receive the official report awarding CDNIS candidate status for accreditation. Interim Head of School David Baird will be sharing the special Report from the CIS/WASC visitors in the coming days. Please watch for his email later this week. CIS/WASC Accreditation Chair Jon Adams will also be reaching out in the coming weeks with information of how parents can support the accreditation process, but if you have any questions please contact Jon Adams.


Parent Liaison Committee

This is the second year since the Board of Governors re-established the Parent Liaison Committee (PLC). The PLC is a multi-stakeholder Committee, comprised of Governors, Parents, and School Administrators. The PLC serves as a communication channel between parents and the Board of Governors. Parent Coffee Morning

Please join us on Thursday, February 16 from 8am-9:30am in the LLAC Lobby for a talk on one of the most challenging parenting tasks - sleep management with Dr. Minna Chau. In this talk, Dr. Minna Chau will share the latest research on the function of sleep and practical strategies for your child to get the right amount of sleep they need. RSVP here.


Traffic and Safety

We work hard to make CDNIS a safe environment. Since there is no public parking at CDNIS and no parking along Nam Long Shan Road, we encourage students/parents to use the school bus or other public transportation. But if you do have to drive, please refrain from honking your car horn, please follow the directions of our security guards/police and please do not block neighbouring driveways. Thank you for your cooperation.


Alan Dick Community Day

Please join us for Alan Dick Community Day on Thursday, March 9 at CDNIS. Take a moment to see some of the highlights the Upper School Photography Team captured last year. The Alan Dick Community Day is a whole-school event. We hope to see many parents at the event March 9. Please wear your pink wristbands, which were distributed last year. The event will go ahead rain or shine. Watch this space for more details.


Easter Holiday Chinese Studies Programmes

During your Chinese New Year break, you might wish to start planning for your Easter holiday Chinese Studies programmes. This includes an exchange programme with Siyuan Primary School in Hainan, which will see 15 grade 4-6 students visit the school in China from April 9-15; as well as a number of IB Chinese Exam Prep courses for current G11/G12 MFL/MSL/MHL students during the Easter break. Details can be found right here.


25th Anniversary Event - Hope Through Music Charity Concert

CDNIS is proud to host the Hope Through Music Charity Concert on Friday, March 3 at 7pm. This charity provides free musical instruments/education to children from low-income families. Funds raised will be used to buy instruments and to recruit musicians to teach the children. The CDNIS Chinese Orchestra, Treble Timbertones Choir, Stage Band and Symphonic Winds will also perform. Applause for a Cause - Save the Date

Applause for a Cause - 24th February, 7:00pm, LLAC Auditorium. An Upper School whistle stop tour through some of the best songs from a variety of musicals from classic to modern, tragic to funny! All proceeds will go directly to charity! Tickets will be on sale from Monday 13th February from 505 at lunchtimes or the LLAC foyer. Adults - $100 and students $50.


Summer Holiday Chinese Studies Programmes

During your Chinese New Year break, you might wish to start planning for your Summer holiday Chinese Studies programme. Activities that are available this year include the Beijing Language B Mandarin Immersion Programme on June 9-23 (20 places for G4-11 students); Taiwan Language A Mandarin Immersion Programme on June 9-23 (30 places for G4-11 Mandarin A/MHL students); and the CDNIS on-campus Mandarin courses for Prep-G11 students that will be held between June and August.

CISPA - US Book Swap

The Upper School Book Swap will be held on Tuesday, February 28 in the Forum. If you would like to volunteer for book sorting or manning the tables at the swap, please contact Kathrin from the Literacy Committee.


CISPA - Parent Workshop

Join us for a parent workshop on conversational reading by US-based literacy consultant Diane Frankenstein. Learn how you can help your children gain a deeper understanding of what they are reading by thinking and reflecting. Read a book, ask a question, start a conversation. Lower School Parent Morning

Is your child struggling with attention and skills associated with executive functioning? Deficits in these skills can have a negative impact on their school performance. House Days

In order to build House spirit and identity in the Lower School, we are holding LS House Days in the middle Friday of each month. Students are asked to wear their PE uniform and house shirts, and at lunch time the cafeterias will be organized so that students can eat with others in their Houses. We look forward to our next LS House Day on Friday, March 10.


CISPA - Paddyfield Book Orders

Paddyfield Book Club order forms will be sent home this week. The school book club orders allows you to buy books at a discount and for CISPA to collect points to buy books to fund events for the students. Order form deadline is Friday, February 24. More details here.


Upper School News

Grade 11 Parents Evening

US Guidance will hold an information evening for parents of Grade 11 students, this Thursday, February 16 from 6:45pm-8:30pm (refreshments beginning at 6:30pm). This session will focus on university preparation and applications. Bus service is provided from Admiralty MTR including pick up and drop off at Wong Chuk Hang MTR station. Cambridge Summer School - Registration is Now Open

For the 5th straight year, CDNIS is proud to host the only official University of Cambridge Summer School in the world bringing several active Cambridge academics to Hong Kong from July 22 to July 28 offering 15-hour courses covering a range of disciplines. Registration is now open. Places are allocated on a first-come first-serve basis and are open to the public. Attention Grade 9 and 10 Students and Parents

We are pleased that three CDNIS students have received offers to study at Oxford and Cambridge this year. While we know not every student wishes to study at either of these schools, we do know that many do, and we also know how selective they are. The US Guidance Department is holding an information session for those interested in applying to Oxbridge on Tuesday, February 14 at 2:30pm in the LLAC Lobby. Higher Education Fair

CDNIS graduates have a solid reputation with college admissions officers from around the world, and because of this, we host more than 300 university visits each year starting in September. The US Guidance Team invites all interested students and their parents to our annual global Higher Education Fair on Friday, March 10. This will be an excellent opportunity for students and their parents to further research their university options, no matter what stage you are in the university process. This event is open to both CDNIS and non-CDNIS students and parents. There is no need to RSVP. Please contact the Guidance Office with any questions.


SCAD Hong Kong Open Day

Silicon Valley Entrepreneurship Workshops

Named by CNN Money as one of the five most unique camps in the US, Camp BizSmart has strategic partnerships with companies such as Microsoft, Cisco and Alibaba, and educational alliances with universities including Stanford and Santa Clara. CDNIS is excited to announce this one of it's kind entrepreneurial skills based workshop for students in aged 11-15 over the Easter Break. Please apply here.


EducationUSA Online Fair

EducationUSA is holding a series of online presentations connecting international students interested in studying in the US with a wide variety of US universities. Various topics will be presented. Spring into Reading

The Upper School library is planning an exciting week of activities for all readers! Join us throughout the week of February 27-March 3 for a visiting author's performance, the CISPA book swap, a book bee (pub quiz-style), and more. Experiment in International Living Summer Programmes

EIL offers summer programmes in many countries for high school students interesting in learning about another culture through hands-on experience and deep cultural immersion.
