Welcome Back Letter by IHOS

Welcome back! The 2017-2018 school year promises to be an exciting and unforgettable one. Check out this letter by Interim Head of School David Baird to get a glimpse of what the CDNIS community can look forward to this year.

2017-2018 Parent Information Handbook

Get the school year off to a great start with the 2017-2018 Parent Information Handbook. Everything you need to know - how to order uniform, bussing details and more - can be found in the guide, which is published on the main school website, and Parent Portal.

New CDNIS Website

An entirely new CDNIS website was launched during the summer, which reflected the school's ongoing support of incorporating the latest technologies into the educational experience of its students. The website features improved features and a brand new interface that should result in a much better user experience for the CDNIS community. Please check out the new website, and contact Clement Huang for any further questions.

CDNIS Mobile App – Coming Soon

The CDNIS mobile app is an important communications tool for the school community and provides vital information and notifications on the go. As a new version of the app is currently in the works, please note that urgent messages - such as school closures due to weather - will be communicated via the main school website until further notice. We look forward to unveiling the new CDNIS mobile app in the coming weeks.

Term 1 Tuition Fee Payment Past Due

Please remember the 1st term tuition fee and capital levy payment was due June 30. We have a few parents who still need to settle their child's outstanding account balance. Please login to the Parent Portal to access any account information. Further inquiries can be directed at our Accounts Department.

Ordering School Lunch

The August to October lunch order form and menus (AugustSeptemberOctober) are now available. Students in Prep to Grade 6 please order lunch using the lunch order form by August 9. You can order lunch on a quarterly or yearly basis. Please contact Maxim's for more information. Maxim's will also be happy to assist parents and provide additional information on August 7-11. Upper School students can purchase lunches at the cafeteria on a daily basis.

School Bus - Sun Bus

Parents that have successfully completed the online registration with Sun Bus before June 30 will receive information about the bus stop and time of pick-up / drop-off in early August. For late registration, please visit the Sun Bus website as soon as possible.  Since bus application will be on a first-come-first-served basis, Sun Bus is unable to guarantee seating but would be happy to suggest alternatives, such as other bus stop or other route with seat available for parents' consideration. Please contact Sun Bus directly via email or calling 3897 8895. Sun Bus will also be on campus on August 7-11.

Shuttle Bus in Service

We are delighted to receive the approval from the Transport Department to run the shuttle bus between Wong Chuk Hang MTR station and CDNIS during school days, starting from August 10, at HK$4 per trip. The time schedule can be found here. The bus stop at CDNIS is at the LLAC. Kindly purchase your tickets from the 9/F General Office before boarding.

Medical Forms

Please log in to the Parent Portal to complete your child's medical form. Medical forms are updated yearly and must be completed before a child starts school. Due to safety issues, children will not be able to participate in ASAs, Experience Week or field trips until the form has been completed. For further questions about the forms, please contact the school nurse.

Insurance

CDNIS insurance broker, Lockton, will be on campus on Friday, August 11 during the Lower School Open House to answer enquiries from parents about individual voluntary Personal Accident Insurance Plan, on top of the CDNIS' group Personal Accident Insurance Plan for students. Lockton is also happy to provide you with information on the additional coverage of other insurance plans if you are interested.

School Uniforms

The CDNIS Uniform Shop will once again relocate all services to the small gym (August 7-11). Opening times will be August 7-9 @ 10am-4pm and August 10-11 @ 8am-4pm. Students will be able to try on and purchase items in the small gym during this time. The Uniform Shop will return to its 5/F location August 14. As the majority of parents purchase uniforms during the Lower School Open House, please stop by and purchase uniform items a few days earlier if possible to avoid the last minute rush.

Term 1 ASA Sign-up

ASA registration is open from July 31 to August 9 via the ASA website. Late registration will run from August 10-15. Late registrants attend activities the week of August 28. Don't miss out!

2017-2018 ASCCA Registration

Registration for the 2017-2018 ASCCA (After School Chinese Culture Academy) is now open. If you are interested in registering your child for the 2017-2018 ASCCA activities, including Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Choir, Chinese Dance and Chinese painting, please go to this link to register online.

Weather Policy

Please take a moment to review the school's weather policy, which can also be found on page 57 of the Parent Information HandbookSchool closures are communicated via the main school website. Additional information is also listed on the EDB website.

Proof of Stay

In accordance with regulations of HKEDB and HK Immigration, new and returning students must hold a valid HKID card and/or a valid passport with authorised residency status to be eligible for a place at CDNIS. Visitor visa holders are ineligible for a place at CDNIS. Please submit proof by email to admissions@cdnis.edu.hk or in person to the General Office. Please contact the Admissions Department if required.

Summer Travels 2017 Postcard and CDNIS Teddy Bear Adventures

Where did everyone go? Take part in the CDNIS Summer Travels 2017 Postcard and Teddy's Summer Adventures project. Thank you for the post cards and pictures sent to us so far. Please keep them coming! Drop us a postcard to: CDNIS Summer Travels 2016, 36 Nam Long Shan Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong or take a picture (don't forget to tell us where the picture was taken) with the CDNIS Teddy Bear and email it to us. We will post the post cards and images on a BIG world map when school resumes.

Testimonials for new CDNIS website

The main homepage on the new CDNIS website features a section dedicated to testimonials by our community. We would greatly appreciate it if student, staff and parents alike send us short testimonials about CDNIS. In addition, it would be great if you could send us a picture of yourself – please send all of this to Clement Huang

Traffic and Safety

We work hard to make CDNIS a safe environment. Since there is no public parking at CDNIS and no parking along Nam Long Shan Road, we encourage students/parents to use the school bus. But if you do have to drive, please refer to the rules found in the Parent Information Handbook (page 44), and note the directions of our security guards/police. Lower School students get dropped @ 9/F entrance, Upper School students/taxis @ LLAC.

No School - have you marked your calendar?

Just a reminder there is no school for students on Friday, September 15 (PDD for staff), the Mid Term Break takes place October 2-6, while Monday, October 9 is another PDD for staff. Please mark these dates on your calendar.

Summer Renovations

The campus has once again seen many exciting improvements over the summer months including a new Lower School Science and Innovation Lab; the development of a Upper School Science Corridor; and the renovation of some of the bathrooms, among other maintenance projects. Visit the new CDNIS website's Campus & Facilities page to learn more.

Students do not need to wear their school uniform. We look forward to seeing you this Friday.

"Survival 101" Orientation - August 18, 2017 (Change of time)

Due to a conflict in schedule, the event time has been changed from 8am-11am to 9am-12pm.  This new arrangement is to ensure that our Early Years Parents (Pre Reception and Reception) can attend the "Survival 101" Orientation before or after their Curriculum Day sessions, which is 8am for the am classes and 12pm for the pm classes. If you have already signed up for the "Survival 101" Orientation and are unable to attend at its new time (9:00-12:00), please kindly email Winnie McCarthy to remove your RSVP from our record. If you would like to sign up for the "Survival 101" Orientation , please click here.

Progress Reports - Reminder

June 2017 Student Progress Reports were published via the Parent Portal in June. Please remember to download and save a copy of your child's report for future reference since the system does not archive reports.

Beginning at 9:30am with breakfast, details of the sessions for parents can be found on the attached document. A special invitation goes out to Grade 7 and Grade 11 parents new to CDNIS. Your Grade 11 child is also new to CDNIS and the Diploma Programme, and this is why we are having two separate one-hour sessions after lunch for you. If you plan on attending, please do RSVP using this online RSVP formNew students are not expected to wear their school uniform on this day.

Sun Bus Schedule For Grade 11 & 12 Students

CDNIS is operating a longer day for the Grade 11s and 12s for the 2017/2018 school year.  In order to accommodate the later 2:45pm dismissal of these two grades, Sun Bus will be operating three dedicated buses at 3pm. The finalization of the 4:10/4:20pm and 5:10/5:20pm bus routes and stops is being worked out but will be very similar to what we have traditionally offered. Please read a letter by Upper School Principal Tim Kaiser and refer to last year's schedule for your reference. For more information, email Tracia Yeung.

G11 IB Diploma Programme Retreat

Grade 11 students have a two-day retreat at the beginning of the school year to build a sense of community and shared vision amongst their fellow DP students. They will also be introduced to the importance of goal setting, year-long planning, study skills and other aspects pertinent to the DP such as the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge Essay. Further details about the retreat and the permission form can be found on the Upper School website.

Calculators for Grade 7

All Grade 7 students will be required to bring a scientific calculator to class starting in September. The school recommends the Casio fx-300ES PLUS Scientific Calculator, but any scientific calculator capable of doing multiple exponents and roots will do. Students will use this calculator in Grade 7 and Grade 8. There is no need for a graphing calculator until Grade 9.

Calculators for Grade 9

All Grade 9 students will be required to bring a graphing calculator to class starting in September. Both the school and the IB Programme recommend the the Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus calculator or the TI Nspire (non-CAS). Students will be using this calculator in Grade 9 through to Grade 12 for both coursework and formal assessments, such as tests and exams. Other acceptable models are the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition (colour display) and the TI-84 Plus Pocket Edition. Further details will be given to students on their first day of school.

Locks and Lockers

All Grade 7 and 8 students will be assigned lockers by their homeroom teachers and will be provided with a school combination lock.  In Grades 9-12, lockers are optional. Students who would like a locker can sign up for one and will need to provide their own combination lock (not a lock with a key). Locker sign-up instructions will be posted in Upper School Daily Announcements during the week of August 7.

Experience Week

Every year, grade 9-12 students venture off to explore all corners of the globe as part of Experience Week. The Experience Week website offers detailed information about this year's 22 programmes. This year's Experience Week will take place October 23-27. Please ensure that all travel documents (passports) are up-to-date and valid through to April 28, 2018. Contact Sherina Hathiramani with questions.

University Visits

More than 300 universities from around the world visit CDNIS every year and meet with our students. Upcoming visits are posted each week in the Flash and on the digital signage.

CDNIS is now an official ACT Test Centre!

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, CDNIS will host the ACT, as we have the SAT, exclusively for our students. See your guidance counsellor if you have questions.
